Imagine the following scenario:
A thief gets into your iPhone—either because they know your passcode or because they grabbed it while it was still unlocked.
Stolen Device Protection helps in this scenario because it creates a security delay in which the thief can’t change your Apple ID password or sign out of your Apple ID for a 1 hour period. It works because it detects the location of your iPhone, and your iPhone asks itself “am I at a ‘known location’?” If the code returns “No, not a known location” then it goes into lockdown mode for a 1 hour period. During the 1 hour delay, Face ID or Touch ID is required to change the password or log out of Apple ID.
Here’s what you must do during that 1 hour delay:
- have your Apple ID and password handy (remember, it’s usually your phone number and/or email)
- log into iCloud.com and see Find My
- tap on the Lost iPhone button [see image], then Lost Mode
